How a Waterjet Pump Works to Transform a Standard Outboard Engine into a Jet Outboard Engine

How a Waterjet Pump Works to Transform a Standard Outboard Engine into a Jet Outboard Engine

For boaters who frequently navigate shallow or debris-filled waters, a jet outboard engine can be a game changer. Unlike traditional propeller-driven outboards, jet outboards use a waterjet pump system to propel the boat forward, allowing for operation in areas with limited water depth and reducing the risk of damage from submerged obstacles. But how does this transformation work? Let’s break down the mechanics of how we convert Tohatsu and Suzuki outboard engines into jet outboard engines before fitting them to our Solar boat hulls, creating complete jet boat packages for you, our customers!

The Basics of a Waterjet Pump

A waterjet pump operates on the principle of drawing water in, pressurizing it, and expelling it at high velocity to generate thrust. Unlike a propeller that slices through the water, a waterjet pump pulls water into a housing and forces it out through a nozzle, which propels the boat forward. The key components of a waterjet pump include:

  • Intake Grate: A protective screen that prevents large debris from entering the pump system.
  • Impeller: A rotating component that draws water into the pump and increases its pressure.
  • Pump Housing: The casing that directs the water flow and controls its movement.
  • Nozzle: The exit point of the pump, which directs the water jet and provides thrust for propulsion.
  • Steering Deflector: A mechanism that redirects the water flow, allowing for steering and maneuvering.

Converting a Standard Outboard Engine to a Jet Outboard Engine

We take Tohatsu and Suzuki outboard engines and modify them by replacing the lower unit with a jet pump assembly. Here’s how we complete the conversion process before installing them on our Solar boat hulls:

  • Removing the Lower Unit: The first step is to detach the existing lower unit of the outboard engine, which houses the propeller and gearbox.
  • Installing the Jet Pump Unit: The jet pump assembly is then mounted in place of the lower unit. This unit contains the impeller, pump housing, and intake grate.
  • Connecting the Drive Shaft: The jet pump’s impeller is powered by the same drive shaft that originally powered the propeller. This ensures a seamless transfer of power from the engine to the pump.
  • Adjusting the Steering System: The jet drive’s steering deflector is linked to the outboard’s existing steering controls, allowing the operator to control direction by redirecting the jet stream.
  • Fine-Tuning for Performance: After installation, adjustments may be needed to optimize the impeller size and nozzle diameter for peak performance.

Benefits of a Jet Outboard Conversion

  • Shallow Water Navigation: Without a propeller extending below the hull, a jet outboard allows boats to operate in extremely shallow water.
  • Reduced Risk of Damage: The absence of exposed propeller blades minimizes the chance of impact damage from rocks, logs, or other submerged obstacles.
  • Enhanced Safety: Since there are no spinning propellers, jet outboards reduce the risk of injury to swimmers or marine life.
  • Improved Maneuverability: Jet drives provide exceptional handling, especially in tight spaces and high-current environments.

Considerations Before Converting

While a jet outboard engine has many advantages, there are also some factors to consider:

  • Efficiency: Jet drives tend to be less fuel-efficient than propeller-driven systems, as they require more energy to move the same volume of water.
  • Power Loss: Due to the mechanics of waterjet propulsion, expect a slight reduction in overall thrust compared to a traditional outboard of the same horsepower.
  • Maintenance: Jet pumps require regular maintenance, including cleaning the intake grate and ensuring the impeller is free from debris.

Our package arrived safe and sound I’m wrapped with it. I am going through the run in process and just love the boat. Thankyou for your very professional approach and service, it’s been a pleasure.

I just want to say how happy I am with your Solar Package, especially the awesome trailer. The boat motor and trailer are set up real good. It’s a credit to you all.

Thank you and your company for the very professional service and correspondence in my purchase of one of your Solar Strela inflatables.

I have completed the two hours on the initial running in at half throttle of the motor and am looking forward to the power that I feel the engine can produce in making a safe trip in the river when I have to open it up. The boat performs probably beyond my expectations in cornering and stopping in a hurry.

Best thing my husband has ever brought. You know I thought oh no it'll mean you'll be out with your mate's 247, but no it has brought our family closer and we have had many family adventures boating all across New Zealand. Stewart Island, Lake Hauroko, Wairaurahiri River, lake wanaka, the Wilkin, the horomanga, the whirinaki, waimana river, waioweka gorge, rangiteiki river, amongst a few, best purchase ever.

My husband and I were privileged to be able to hunt with Gary on his boat and what an awesome experience it was. We were able to penetrate deep into the Ngahere via the river. We quickly accessed the good hunting spots. These spots would normally take a long day of walking to access.

The boat managed the problematic areas of the river with ease and our comfort was not compromised. The boat was more than capable of the payload of 3 people, 3 dogs, and our hunting gear. Not to mention our harvested quarry on the return trip home.
